Venice – known as “city of canals” and La Serenissima is capital of Veneto and Venice district in Italia. Its population is 271.663 (January, 2004). Venice, in company with Padova, takes place in Padova Town- Venice with the population of 1.600.000. The city covers many small islands in V Venice Lagoon, along Adriatic Sea in northeast Italia. This sea water lagoon stretches along the sea route between estuaries of Po river in the South and Piave River in the North. It was estimated that the population was 272.000 including all communes of Venezia, the history city of Venice has population of 62000 in which, 176.000 people live in Terraferma and 31.000 people live in other islands of the lagoon.

In the past, Venice Republic was known as a marine empire and the region preparing for Crusade as well as the important trade center (specially, spice trade) and art in the Renaissance.
In Venice you can enjoy great weather all year-round, therefore Venice is always full of tourist. The time from the Easter to October is the main season of tourism and hotels always have great number of customers and sometime there is no room available. Two other stages are Carnival festival in February and weeks at the approach to Christmas.
In the summer, especially from mid of July to end of August, Venice is usually very dense, there are a lot of people queuing to wait for visiting museums.
Although fall and spring with blue sky and sweet weather are the most suitable time to visit, throughout the winter, fog is one of factors contributing to the romantic attractiveness of the city. If you want to visit Venice in the mid October and the end of February, don’t forget to prepare wellington boots because it might be flood season, it might rain heavily. And if you want to have a two or three day- trip, remember that there are some places and restaurants close on Sunday and Monday.

How to go?

Airplane: the nearest airport is Marco Polo in continent near Mestre. It is about 25 kilometers from Venice to The Treviso airport is a small airport, about 25 kilometers from Venice, but now it is busier and busier because being main destination of low price airline such as: Ryanair, SkyEurope and Transavia.
Both airports have bus systems connecting to Venice, Mestre, Padua and other cities. Macro airport has bus system leading to wharf of waterway-bus Alilaguna. From here, you can wait for train to San Macro via Murano, Lodo and Arsenale. Or you can wait for lơ price Fondamente Nouve. If you have much many and want to travel faster you can rent a water-taxi, it is about 100 Euros.

By train: Because Venice takes place in a lagoon, waterway plays an important role in traffic. The common way to go Venice is by train. The train from inland, going through Mestre to Venezia. Train station Santa Lucia takes place in the West of Venice. From here, you have many choices to go to hotel and other place in the island easily by waterway bus or taxi or by foot. There are many train routes straight to Venice from places in the world such as Munich, Budapest, Zagreb& Ljubljana. From Vienna you also go to Venice by train through Autrian OBB system.

By car: you can go to Venice by car from the West, but you have to park in the entrance of the city. Parking cost in Venice is quite expensive and cars following one other lead to traffic jam. Visitor can park in the inland then get a waterway-bus, train or bus to go to Venice. Parking near Mestre railway station and get bus to Venezia, you will find out many train trips with short route and low price. Besides, you can choose Venezia St. Lucia as a great starting to go to Venice. Coming to Lido, a driver can use a ferry-car to travel from Tronchetto to the city.

Most of companies proving cars for rent have agencies in Piazzale which is right in a corner of the city, in the main parking. After parking, you go to the company providing cars for rent and receive the key. Don’t park in parking-lot.

By bus: There is a bus-route from Marco Polo and Piazzale Roma, in the west bank of Venice, two routes each hour and it will take you 20 minutes to finish. In Piazzle Roma bus stop, there are many kinds of taxi and waterway-bus. From Mestre, with a ticket bough from tourism company or tobacco stall, you can go to Venezia by bus. Venice connects to other cities by bus.

Traveling in the city

Venice is walking city, you can walk easily to everywhere. There is no vehicle in the city, this creates a special style for Venice. You need to adapt yourself to walk and stand all day because it will make you feel tired.
Rialtine Island was considered as the main part of Venice. It just takes an hour to visit the island from first to last because it’s very small.
If you want to go faster, you should use vaporetti and waterway-bus. In general, although the route of vaporetti always changes, it still is the greatest way to travel. If you want to visit Venice just for several days, Vaporetti is a good choice because it is cheaper than waterway- taxi. And gondola is great suggest for a romantic visit around the canal.

Where to go?

Church

  • You can visit San Marco free of charge but other church will charge for visiting. Therefore you should buy tickets if you want to go on a sightseeing of three churches or more.
  • Saint Mark’s Bailica- taken place in Piazza San Marco, is one of famous place when you visit Venice. Most of Italian churches have their own serious rules in getting dress, you must not to dress a miniskirt or open shoulder shirt. You also must not to carry handbag or backpack. Taking photograph is prohibited and you are permitted to visit within 10 minutes. There is no admission charge for people to enter but you have to buy a ticket costing 3 Euros to see the museum in the upstairs and 2 Euros to see the room of precious things and altar above.
  • San Giovani e Paolo: a great and beautiful church of Dominican religious order with tombs of some doges. It has the front of eaves following the Renaissance style of Scuola San Marco and mounted statue of military leader Colleone.
  • Santa Maria Gloriosa Dei Frari: a big seminary church with many drawings and commemorative works.
  • Sanra Maria Dei Miracoli: a beautiful church having style of a jewelry box. Its outside is quite simple but was decorated by marble.

Museum

  • You have to buy ticket to visit some museums in Venice but it’s not all. If you want to visit two big museums of Saint Marc Square: The Doge’s Palace and Correr Museum, the ticket price is higher, and was sold in tourism information stall.
  • Correr museum 52 San Marco: it has collection of terrestrial globe from XVI century.it also has a library and an archaeological museum of Roman antique, and gallery. Don’t mis the Art museum café with table laid in San Marco Square.

  • Doge’s Palace: don’t miss the tour around Secret Ltinerary, you will have a chance to discover this building, workplace of the government, Casanova prison and the structure of tile roof.
  • La Fenice Theater: you can visit the historical theater by multi languages audio system, it burned in 1996 and was rebuilt in 2003
  • Jewish Ghetto of Venice: the region of Jews is the first “ghetto”, and the word “ghetto” was the name of regions forming Atheist group. Nowadays, the life of Jews is still active and, in other place of Venice, it’s still the residence of five synagogues. If you go here on Saturday, some restaurants and places of Jews may close.
  • Jews museum: price of ticket is 3 Euros. Close on Saturday and holidays of Jews
  • Mocenigo Place: Close on Monday. It has clothes collection of XVIII century
  • Peggy Guggenheim Palazzo Venier Dei Leoni, take place in Dorsoduro of Venice, in the East of the Accademia bridge. It will open in national fesival. People displayed the collection of modern art which was recapitulated by Peggy Guggengeim.
  • Ca’Pesaro- is a beautiful place with modern art exhibition of Italia in 19th century like Marco Polo museum.
  • Ca’ Rezzonico- is a museum of 18th century, revitalizing air of aristocratic Venice.
  • Bell tower of ST Mark.- it was built in 1912 to replace for the old one which was collapsed in 1902. You can see overall picture of Venice from top of the bell tower.
  • Clock tower- Tore dell’ Orologio. It close to embellish for many years.
  • Scoula Grande di San Rocco- a work of Tintoretto. It was a great example of Manierist art. Tourist maybe feel excited with mirrors hang out in the cell.
  • Galleria dell’s Accademia di Venezia- is the most important museum of Venice as well as the most beautiful museum of Italia.
  • Glass museum- It takes place in Murano. This island is specific by its glass art work.

  • Rialto market and Rialto Bridge in San Polo: the bridge is one of the famous symbols of Venice. It has the history of more than 800 years. It was finished in 1592 and replaced for the old one collapsing in 1524

  • If your time in Venice is limited and you don’t know well about thí city, for example it is the first time you go to Venice, you should buy the items you like with the acceptable price. There is no hope to see the shop again, nearly impossible, because streets of Venice is very complex
